Feel free to chime in, but if you do, don't give just a yes or no answer, tell me why. And not a "yes, just because I do". I want to see why people believe or don't believe.
Personally, I've always had a very negative view of organized religion, and always said I didn't really believe in god, but then a few years ago I decided that was too definate, and classified myself as agnostic. However, now I feel fairly confident in saying that I don't believe there is a God.
I have a fairly pessimistic view of the world, and I have to be honest, I don't see anything going on in the world to convince me that there is any sort of supreme power behind it. I feel that if there was, things wouldn't be where they are. And I've heard the theory that god has nothing to do with what's going on now... that he simply set things in motion and backed off. And I tell ya, I don't buy it.
The things that I find to be especially grey in my mind are the following:
I believe that humans are really just another species of animal in the world, and studies have shown that we are very closely related to certain animals, such as orangutans, so my question is this. Why do people of all religions feel the need to preach, pray, and try to convert people to their way of thought? If god is out there, and he created us, then why don't animals, especially those closely related to us, have any concept of this belief, and why don't they have to live up to the same expectations? It seems to me they just live, and accept things for what they are. If god is there, why is it only humans that need to acknowledge him?
If there is a god, why are people capable of such horrible things? And why do people fight and kill others in the name of their god? I would think if there is a god, he would condemn this behavior, and since people of all faiths have done this sort of thing, it leads me to believe that at least one of them is wrong, and further, that there is no actual god behind it, rather people's beliefs gone too far.
With different religious factions all saying their god is the right god, by default someone is wrong. And if people are so serious in their beliefs, I would think that seeing someone else with the same seriousness behind their respective beliefs would make them think twice about their own.
And the final thing that doesn't make sense, is that if there is truly a god, then why can an innocent child be born to a crack whore mother, and be brought into this world without a chance? There is no one that can convince me that this child is suffering for someone else's sins. If there was a god, one of two things would happen. This mother would be "guided" towards cleaning up her act to save her child, or this mother would suffer the fate of death before being allowed to bring a child into the world. In no world where there is a god that I can imagine, should a child be able to be born into a hopeless situation because of someone else's choices.
Sorry for the rambling post.
